
Fort Yukon was built originally to protect the Gwich'in Athabascans
from the Russians after the sale of Alaska to the United States of America
from Russia, The Real People of Alaska (Native) had no vote in this
sale and fought hard to gain some form of restitution for the taking
of their land. Fort Yukon was built during
the Gold Rush yet the village existed further up by the Sucker and
Porcupine Rivers and prior to contact with Non-Natives the village
had existed for 1,000 plus years.
Fort Yukon has six hundred residents with a 130 being students in
the local public
school. Fort Yukon has great wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing and
gold mining plus the local Gwich'in People are excellent Artisans
and produce quality fur products, carvings, bead work and Birch Bark
Baskets. |
